Sylvie Dubuc joined the department as a research officer in 2006. Her previous work focused on quantitative studies of population dynamics in space and time and their links with the economy, society and the environment. During her thesis at the Geography Department of Paris Sorbonne she analysed the processes of depopulation and repopulation and their geographical patterns in a low density region in her native France with emphasis on the impact of urban dynamics and rural-urban relationships. During her post-doc research in India, she investigated demographic factors as a potential environmental pressure indicator. She is now focusing on demographic trends with emphasis on projections of ethnic groups in the UK. She has identified a rise in the sex-ratio of births to India-born mothers in England and Wales. Her current interest includes studies on the demographic manifestation of and factors related to son preference, seen in South and East Asia. In 2007 she was awarded an ESRC Grant to study 'Demographic characteristics and projections of ethnic minority and religious groups'.
