Personal Info

Ann Buchanan is currently Director of the Centre for Research into Parenting and Children, Professor of Social Work and Fellow of St Hilda's College. Before entering academic life in 1990, she spent ten years working as a child psychiatric social worker in an inner urban area. Her current research interests are promoting well being in children especially those at risk of social exclusion. In 2009 she was invited to talk on her 17 years of research in this area to the Cabinet Office Strategy Unit. Some of her earlier work was based on longitudinal data from the National Child Development Study. This was informed by her field studies and research eliciting the views of children. Field studies include a project for Nuffield Foundation on welfare reporting for children under Section 8 of the Children Act 1989. Previous research grants have come from: the ESRC; Office of the Deputy Prime Minister; EU (Tempis Tacis - Russia); the Mental Health Foundation; NHS Executive Anglia and Oxford; Joseph Rowntree Foundation; Barnardo's; Children's Society; the Baring Foundation; the Samaritans and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. In 2009 she completed, with Dr Flouri, a study of Grandparent involvement with adolescents for the ESRC.  She is currently serving on the University of Oxford Research Committee. In 2008 she was taken to Beijing by the British Academy/Co-reach initiative to showcase her research. She returned there in September 2010 at the invitation of the Chinese Academy of Social Science. In 2009, she revisited the State University of St Petersburg (Russia) as a Visiting Professor. She was appointed to the Council of the ESRC in 2007 and in 2009 chaired the group responsible for updating the ESRC Framework for Research Ethics. In 2010 she was reappointed to the Council for a further three years and Chairs the Evaluation Committee.  Recently her research was featured by both the Academy of Social Science and Oxford University as research that achieved 'impact'.  She became an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2009 and was appointed to the Council of the Aczdemy in 2011.
