Fran Bennett works half time in the department as a senior research fellow, with a focus on social policy, engaged in teaching and research. She has a particular interest in social security policy, gender issues, and poverty, income distribution and participation. Her most recent research has involved examining (with others) the interaction between within-household inequalities and policy on tax and benefits in the UK in a project in the ESRC-funded Gender Equality Network. She is also an independent consultant, and has written extensively on social policy issues for the UK government, NGOs and others. With Prof Jonathan Bradshaw, she is one of the UK independent experts on social inclusion for the European Commission. She is joint editor of the on-line Social Policy Digest for the Journal of Social Policy, and is on the JSP editorial board; she is also joint editor of the Journal of Poverty and Social Justice (formerly Benefits). She was a member of two Fabian Society Commissions, on Life Chances and Child Poverty and on Taxation and Citizenship, and of the TUC Commission on Vulnerable Employment. She worked for the Child Poverty Action Group for ten years from 1983-93, as deputy director and then director, and was more recently policy advisor on UK and EU poverty issues for Oxfam GB.
