Dr.Maria Philomena Gaspar, PhD, MSc, B.A.

Dr Maria Filomena Gaspar is University Auxiliary Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. She was trained as Psychologist and she has a master and a doctoral degrees in Educational Psychology. She is directly involved in the post-graduation training of pedagogues, psychologists, social-workers and other professionals in parenting education and support in community contexts, and in the basic and pos-graduation formation in the areas of Family Education and Early Years’ Education. She supervised and stills supervising many post-graduate students.

 

Her research interests are in Family Education (development, implementation and evaluation of parenting education and support), particularly in preschool contexts, and in Early Years' Education, as  well as  the promotion of child well-being and  the prevention of anti-social and conduct problems in children. She is currently carrying out the coordination of the Portuguese translation of USA – Webster-Stratton’s ‘Incredible Years’ Basic parenting program and plans to evaluate  the Basic parenting program to see if it is effective in the Portuguese context. She is also involved in a networking of early childhood specialists and researchers from Hedmark University College (Norway), University of London UK), University of Oulu (Finland), Pedagogical University of Tallinn (Estonia) and Vilnius Pedagogical University (Lithuania). The networking goals are: 1. To enable parental participation in early years education 2.To develop and compare new models of parental participation in early years education in participating countries. She is also involved in early childhood psychological and educational assessment and was a member of the Portugese team that translated the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ, Goodman, 1997).

 

She is member of the editorial board of the Revista Portuguesa de Pedagogia (Portuguese Journal of Pedagogie). She regularly speaks at national and international seminars and meetings. She organized several international seminars, meetings and workshops. She is member of the Centro de Psicopedagogia: research centre witch founding comes from the state research foundation for the science and the technologies (FCT).
