Ann Buchanan is Director for the Oxford Centre for Research into Parenting and Children, as well as University Professor in Social Work at Bamett House and Fellow of St Hilda's College.
Before entering academic life in 1990, she spent ten years working as a child psychiatric social worker in an inner urban area. Her current research interests are promoting well being in children especially children at risk of social exclusion. Some of her earlier work was based on longitudinal data from the National Child Development Study. This was informed by her field studies and research eliciting the views of children. .
Recent field studies include a project for Nuffield Foundation on welfare reporting for children under Section 8 of the Children Act 1989. Previous research grants have come from: the ESRC; the Mental Health Foundation; NHS Executive Anglia and Oxford; Joseph Rowntree Foundation (2); Barnardo's (3); Children's Society; the Baring Foundation, the Samaritans and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. She recently completed two projects. First a literature review on the Impact of Government Policies on Children Aged 0-13. The second was a 3-year EU project to develop school social work services in Perm USSR. This was being undertaken with a team from Martin-Luther University in Halle German, Katholieke Hogescholl in Limburg, Belgium and University of Oxford. She has also just completed with Charlotte Ritchie a study on young adults views of court ordered contact. She is currently working on a normative study of grandparents as seen through the eyes of young people and editing a major 4- volume anthology for Routledge on Social Work..
