Oxford Centre for Family Law and Policy
The Oxford Centre for Family Law and Policy (OXFLAP) was established
in January 2001 to bring together family lawyers and family policy
researchers who study the regulation of obligations arising from
personal relationships from a cross national perspective.
The Centre works closely with a group of international associates
who contribute to workshops at the IISL, Onati, Family Law and Policy at the SLSA,
RCSL and LSA meetings.
Our aim is to develop the contribution of scientific empirical
work to informing policy debate in an area where emotions tend to
run high, and anecdotal evidence is all too common. The contribution
of our colleagues from other jurisdictions is of great value in
broadening our perspective on the issues of the day. For example,
to hear from Polish colleagues of the problems of a divorce rate
which was thought to be too low, indicating too great a barrier
to the exercise of choice in situations of alcohol abuse or violence,
was troubling but also helpful in framing new ways of thinking about
changing family structures. With Australian colleagues we share the debate on child contact and child maintenance.
